The exact work depends on the make, model and type of system, but a typical air conditioning service includes:

• Filter and coil cleaning on the indoor units, and a check and clean of the outdoor unit coil where accessible.
• Airflow checks on fans, louvres and grilles, so air moves freely around the room.
• Drainage checks on the condensate drain, tray and any pump, to prevent leaks and smells.
• Electrical checks on connections, isolators and controls.
• Refrigerant checks, looking at operating pressures and temperatures and for any signs of a leak.

Under the F-Gas regulations, systems holding refrigerant at or above the regulatory threshold (measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent) must be leak checked at set intervals by a certified engineer, with records kept. This mainly affects larger multi-split and commercial systems.
